Code review is an extremely delicate form of feedback: when people put their soul into work, they become vulnerable and sensitive to criticism. Saying that “the code review is not about us, it’s about our code” doesn’t help much. We are what we do.
Hiring and mentoring junior talent can be a huge competitive advantage. Junior engineers often bring new energy and enthusiasm to a team, are eager to learn and grow, and can be great ambassadors of the team. But there are many tactical challenges involved in successfully onboarding and growing a junior engineer that are hardly ever discussed. In this post, I wish to explore some of these challenges.

For those who don’t know me, I’m autistic. Asperger’s Syndrome to be precise. I’ve been a developer for the better part of a decade.
I didn’t find out I was ASD until 19, and didn’t really reconcile with that until likely years later. These posts will be a combination of advice I’ve given to those who are like me, as well as a letter of sorts to my past self who could have used a lot of it.
